Default Zombie Campaign Ideas

I am about to start a 4th edition campaign with a few friends based in a zombie apocalypse in modern New York. I was planning to give them free roam of the US, and the main goal of the campaign is survival as long as it is possible. No cure for the virus, and each player gets to make 2 or 3 characters so they can continue playing if they die or turn into a zombie.
I was wondering if anyone could help me come up with ways to make the overall campaign more appealing and/or interesting. I was considering throwing in, at one point or another, a few children from another group that are now abandoned because they are the lone survivors of a zombie attack on their group, giving the party a moral dilemma since they most likely wont have the means to support the children. However, one or more of the players may have taken the Low Empathy disadvantage.

One nasty trick would be to lull your players into thinking there are only Slow Zombies, then throw a bunch of Fast Zombies at them.

Thanks for the tip. I was looking into the idea of making several different zombie types. Because you know if a morbidly obese person, an average person, and a really fit person became zombies, they wouldn't all be the same

As someone who really hates fast zombies, I'd tweak this suggestion into taking the time to fully apply a zombie template to all sorts of different mundane character types. Like you say, a regular slow zombie should be different in function if they were morbidly obese(heh) vs if they were a seven foot-tall ball-player. Making crawlers and child zombies are other ways to make interesting variety in the undead horde without going the L4D route of "people with hoodies become ninja zombies!!!"

Of course, if that's what you want, go for it.

Don't know about you but as a native New Yorker, NY would be a GREAT setting for a Zombiepocalypse!! All those tunnels, skyscrapers, niches for the dead to wait for the vic.... uhm I mean PC's.

Don't know how long you'd plan on running this campaign but one scenario comes right off top of my head. The PC's are trapped in the new but still incomplete Freedom Tower. And they have to find a way off by grappling down or trying to get to another building.

I always liked "fast zombies are living people infected with the z virus, while slow zombies are corpses reanimated by the z virus". Adding in occassional mutations that result in weirder types.

So it's like a combination of 28 Days Later zombies and ordinary ones? That's a damn good idea!

Yeah, basically the fast zombies can be dropped by center-mass hits or whatever, but given a few minutes/however long you want they get back up unless you destroyed their brain.

If you only get bit, then you turn into a fast zombie. Or you can have the z virus be airborn and survivors are just those who are immune. Anyway, you have to be infected and die in order to come back as a shambler.

Usually I have the fast zombies be quick but regular human strength and can be killed by anything that would kill a normal human, though they do have HPT. The slow zombies mostly only shamble, but they can lunge 2-3 yards, they're fairly strong, and can only be stopped by destroying their brain.

Player interest will come from the ability to achieve a goal. If you put them in a city, and tell them that you want to run a campaign to see how long they can survive, I think interest from players will be low. At least... I would lose some interest if there wasn't something I could really hope to achieve to "win" the scenario. You might consider the cliche (it's cliche for a reason) of the characters hearing of a place where survivors are gathering and making a go of it. Reaching that place can be a goal that gives hope so the players are interested.

Using a group of orphaned children as a moral dilemma is a risky thing for a GM. Not only might the characters ignore them, but really this one will depend on how invested the players are in the story. I play with a number of people that would laugh, and then start considering ways of using the children as a means of shielding themselves from zombie encounters... like tossing a kid to the zombies so they could keep running.

Finally... I'd find a way to make it so the infection isn't "yes" or "no". If you use a binary system like that, then a player gets bit or they don't. And you either keep tension up by killing off characters (or zombifying them), or you lose tension by the players starting to realize they're never going to get infected. I like the idea of something where repeated exposures mean increased probability of dying/"turning into a zombie". This way, you have something the players don't want to happen, but which you can use a few times. Keeps the tension up. The player will know things like "If I get bit one more time, I'm probably not going to make it".
