Make it a bendy socket that can extend the blade along the staff's direction or perpendicularly according to the tactical need. It also serves as iron sights.

Aegis-Class Precipitation Shielding: The staff can project a magical canopy strong enough to hold off water droplets. It's a magical umbrella.

Extend this to ground level, make it opaque, and add the automatic-verticality feature of an earlier post, and you have a tent-pole which produces its own tent.

Scroll feeder: Store a scroll rolled up vertically in a small compartment, which can be pulled out with a low-profile metal clamp affixed to one side. Allows use of Fast-Draw to ready the scroll for reading.

Snakehead: Can animate and hiss at people when you feel like it. Also comes in growling lion/wolf/bear/etc.

Handlock: Hexes itself to your hand on pickup. A password, written on the staff, lets you put it down. Helps against disarms and accidental drops, just like a locked gauntlet.

Curse: Your staff is cursed! But the Curse is Limited to "anyone other than you." Usually comes with an embossed warning, to deter theft.

Embossed warning: Deters theft. Does not require that a curse actually be present. If these become too common, though...

U.R.S.U.L.A. Noise Dampener: Magical device that created a spherical field around the staff that muffles sound traversing it. It makes both the mage's chanting and the spell's sound difficult to hear from the outside, but it also effectively gives the mage Hard of Hearing to hear anything from outside it.

Add the above and the mage can take shelter and read his tomes in peace without being bothered by the barbarian's snoring.

Let's list some cool accessories to add to your wizard's staff.
The advantage of 'Tacticool' Accessories are that they count towards a staff's Power Item total...

Or going by modern adventure style crpgs and tactical fighters, an invisible sling so when 'stowed' it hovers just off your back.

A few more:

Invisible Intangible Lanyard, $10,000. Clamp one band of the IIL onto the staff and the other onto your wrist, then simply hold out your hand and your dropped or disarmed staff will leap back into it (requires a Ready Maneuver)! Can also be used on other small items of gear, up to 50 pounds. The ILL has a maximum length of 10 yards, that is the item will not go more than 10 yards from you, ever (yes, this makes 'monster' fishing with your ILLed items dangerous). The Invisible Intangible Lanyard is 'indestructible', the bands however are only as durable as the thick hardened leather they are made from.

Lantern Hook, $20. A latchable hoop that bolts onto the top of your staff, let's you hang a lantern from it. With a sturdy enough lantern the Staff can double as a Two-Handed Flail.

Single Shot Scroll Activator Case, $5000. Load a Charged scroll into this 'under-staff' scroll case, then prime the scroll by sliding the case shut and repeat the Words of Priming ("This is my Staff, there are many like it but this one is mine") until the SSSAC glows to indicate the scroll is primed (priming takes as long as the scroll takes to cast). When you wish to activate a primed scroll simply point the staff at the target and shout the Word of Activation ("Boom!").

Invisible Intangible Back Sheathe, $1,000. Allows for nearly instant Readying (with a Fast Draw) and stowing. The sheathe is guaranteed to never hang-up on protuberances in the dungeon (no guarantees about Things Outside Our Space and Time). You can even wear the IIBS harness under your robes so all the peasantry will see is your Staff of Power hovering off your back! Both harness and staff band must be used in conjunction.

Survival Hideaway Infinite Scroll Compartment, $10,000. This hidden compartment is actually a slim scroll tube that can hold all of your scrolls. Or up to one half pound of equipment that you can fit through a 3/4 inch diameter opening. Opening the staff's end cap while muttering the proper Words of Activation and you open the Infinite Scroll Tube, this space holds an infinite number of scrolls, weightlessly. Open it without muttering the Words of Activation and you open a 3/4 inch diameter, 6 inch deep empty tube the perfect size for the Outdoorsman Emergency Survival kit (10 steel fishing hooks, 100 yards of silk fishing cord, a slim 2 inch dagger, Dwarven Saw Wire Garrote, 10 waxed alchemical matches, and 4 sewing needles, $20, included for free. Treat as basic quality Survival tools). Retrieving scrolls from the Infinite Scroll Tube is sometimes a process. It takes a Ready Maneuver to pull one scroll out, and the scroll is randomly chosen from all the scrolls you've put in it.

Another post reminded me that I had this in a game once.
Undead Wyvern Frame
The body of the staff is constructed from an undead wyvern.

I'm a fan of the "warstaff" myself - a wizard staff with a sword blade on one end. Use the swordy end for stabbing and slashing, flip it around and use the butt for spellcasting. Not certain this is compatible with Basic Magic's concept of a "staff," however. For melee stats, use the dueling glaive or naginata stats. If you want a name for it (warstaff kind of works), atgeir was the best I got when I made a thread to figure one out. It's more for a mage/warrior hybrid than a dedicated mage, of course.

Emergency Spellbook: Grab a raised knurl on the staff, mutter the command word, and pull, and from an extra-dimensional space unrolls a 2'-tall, staff-length sheet of vellum, still attached to the staff. Useful for limited backup of emergency spell-texts, hidden research notes, treasure maps, and wizarding-school house banners. For extra cost, a self-inking quill can also be stored in the unroller.

Bread-Crumb Dispenser: When invoked, this feature will leave an invisible magical mark on any surface touched by the foot of the staff. These marks can be made visible by anyone speaking the correct incantation (unique to each staff). Handy for retracing your own trail out of labyrinths, guiding rescuers to your mortal remains, or proving the identity of a highwayman earlier poked in the chest.

Sling pouch - At the command word the top 8" of the head hinge open to reveal a webbed pocket suitable for use as a staff sling. Handy for tossing potions long distances.

Using screws might damage the staff, so unless you can get a qualified staff artificer to install the rails, I suggest using clamps instead. That's assuming this is an after-market addition - if installed during creation of the staff it should be okay as long as your current environment allows for staves with some metallic components. If not, you'll be to look at some organic substitute. Magic can be so annoyingly fickle.
