Default How Steve Jackson Games could become bigger than D&D

In all my gaming years i have seen D&D be the leader of the pack, in the Rpg world.

But i think steve Jackon Games could overtake that role.

If they follow these easy steps, take the Gurps engine, and make it into a d20 engine that is more rules lite than gurps, and still have the point building options that gurps offer.

Thing abort it D&D wants to go pure digital, no more books after 2024.

STEVE JACKON GAMES could become the biggest company in the world. I think gurps is one of the best systems in the world, but its way to complicated, for young Kids, thats why D&D is popular.

They should make a d20 game with a point buy build system like gurps, but make it more fantasy than realistic. So thas it easy to play.
And the rules should be in one hardcore book...

What do you think

Steve Jackson et al has 40+ years experience of running a gaming company. I trust their decisions.

If SJG was to do that they a) would have to compete with dozens of point-buy d20-derivatives and b) loose the GURPS customer base.

Somehow I don't think that would be too wise a move.

If you want point-buy d20 try Mutants & Masterminds.

Being bigger than D&D and being a stable, sustainable company are two different things. If they took the market share that Wizards/Hasbro has now, it would require the company to transform accordingly. It would not be the same company we know and love now.

Sometimes bigger isn't better, it all depends on priorities.

True 20 is also a decent Generic Universal version of d20. It has some blindingly obvious shortfalls, IMO, however it's the best version of d20/D&D I've ever dealt with.

The base question almost relates to:

How could Ford make better cars?

By making BMWs.

You could argue that things could have turned out a lot differently for SJG had Steve Jackson decided to let Interplay use GURPS for Fallout. It's too bad there's no computer game that uses the GURPS system. SJG is getting into the digital realm lately so maybe we'll see it? Who knows.

the worse my headaches gets.

GURPS is ND6 roll-beneath. ND6 is not the same kind of thing as D20. One is a flat probability distribution, and one is a bell curve. How would you even... I mean...

That's like saying equipping an army is easy, you just take the pancakes they ate for breakfast and turn them into the abstract concept of victory...

It's like turning a tank into a zeppelin - literally the only thing they have in common is that they transport people.

And that's before you grapple with the reality that you can build the best RPG gaming system ever (and it is far from obvious a D20-ified GURPS point-buy engine would qualify), but actually selling any copies of it is another matter entirely, let alone selling enough to multiply the size of your company a hundredfold.

Must be nice for such things to be "easy".
