Either '83 or '99, to maximize either russian drama or computers. And to have the Y2K scare go down in the game.

Lets go with 1981, Brezhnev dies 1982 that gives the Russians a possible different power struggle to succeed him, plus both a Feeling of Concern over Reagan starting an economic war, and a bit of time to find something that holds the USSR together.

I feel the FN P90 was a rather iconic weapon for the series, so 1991 or later. I'd say go with 1996, matching up with around the time they got the Stargate working in SG-1 (SG-1 started airing in 1997, and took place 1 year after the events of the movie; while the movie was from 1994, there are enough differences that adjusting the timeline for SG-1 seems appropriate).

Just for the record they didn't have P90s from the start. O'neill carried an HK MP5 of some sort for quite a while. It might be a limited window since by the time of SGU it was all G-36s (and don't make me choose which of those I'd rather be packing.).

You might actually have trouble gettting PCs to carry P90s once they'd seen the stats.

I guess my memory was off - looking it up, apparently they started using them in season 4, and switched to the MP7 in season 9.

SG1 seems like a setting where mook rules (mooks are incapacitated by 1 penetrating hit) would be in effect, and the FN-P90 probably has the best accuracy, armor penetration, and magazine capacity for a weapon of its weight, bulk, and MinST - making it arguably the best SMG against armored mooks. Against Worthies and Bosses, you've probably got to aim for the Vitals or Skull to have an appreciable effect, however (although if you do aim at such, they outperform nearly every other SMG in High Tech - the only one that is superior is the MP7... but that's not available until 2002, which is after the time period we're looking at).

If you can get APHC ammo for it, that would be preferable to ball - the P90 has a sufficiently-small calliber to count as pi- for both ball and AP/APHC. HP, at 4d(0.5) pi, would indeed be useful against unarmored foes, but I suspect the mostly-ceremonial armor worn by rank-and-file Jaffa would be effective against such.
