Thanks to those above for the historical references, the detailed chart, and the laugh!

Of course if your Status 8 emperor happens to be Charles II of Spain … well that's either very royal blood or possibly going out the other side of the scale... the blood may be expensive to acquire, but it may not be a great deal of use. But who knows with magic?

Random thoughts:
- in the era of humoral medicine, royal blood could be let a lot more freely
- on the other hand, in setting that believes in magic, giving someone else a sample of your blood would be something close to insanity. To do so would be, at the very least, trusting them with your life.

As of January 2011 there were 5,753 people in the line of succession to the British throne. There are more now.

It is a good bet that everyone reading this is a descendant of Charlemagne.

Royal blood is as common as dirt.

So would royal inbreeding be a way to concentrate the blood? The more inbred the monarch, the more his blood is worth?

Tell that to the Hapsburgs & Egyptian Pharaohs with congenital health problems such as three rows of teeth or missing clavicles .

Yes, but the inbreeding is controlled by the power behind the throne, who is using the blood for their own alchemical use.

But what makes blood royal? does the crown legitimize the blood, or the blood the crown? I think its a little of both: they strengthen each other. And from a magical perspective actually ruling is likely to matter, as is the "percentage" of blood that is royal.

Though it strongly depends on the magic system. It might be pure genetics, it might be about coronation ceremonies performed by the proper priests, or it might be about exercising practical power.

My Uncle by marriage is one of them ;-)

Late Maternal Grandmother was a direct descendant of William Peverell the Elder , who came over with William the Conquer . Fair bit of bed hopping during 11th to 15th century in our family tree . Plus illegitimate child of George 2nd or 4th somewhere .

Both Boris Johnson & Prime Minister, David Cameron. Both men are descended from George II to .

To be in line for the throne you have to be a legitimate descendant of the Electress Sophia.

In real life it is the first. For your fantasy the later might work.

Of course in real life the crown is legitimized by whoever is tough enough in battle and wily enough in statecraft.
