That's pretty realistic, unless the threshold for damaging the armor is much much lower than the threshold for damaging the wearer. For metal armor at low tech, I doubt that's true (for wood, cloth, or leather armor it probably is, and for ceramic armor at high tech it certainly is).

True also, by my quick math. I'm just keep looking for a nicking at the armor scenario, which probably isn't realistic at all for armor.

But I think everyone is talking about the base armor getting damaged. What about just the fiddly bits, straps, buckles, whatevers?
Just looking at "impenetrable" plate, I see lots of fiddly crap that isn't armor. |

There are specific rules for deliberately targeting straps and articulations.
