Default [IC] The great black hills gold rush

Saturday 1st July 1876 Black Hills Territory

The Two Sams

You left Cheyenne just over a week ago and have been making good time though the plains of Dakota Territory. During the interminably long days you have been aware of wagons ahead and behind you all aiming for the same destination it would seem, the Black Hills Territory. Thankfully these wagons have been sufficiently far away that you have not had to deal with the occupants in any meaningful way. Every now and then you have heard the occupants of several wagons exchange friendly shouts and waves. You have not returned any of these.
This all changed of course when you finally reached the Hills. There the trails narrowed and wound their way in between the higher hill and were of course wooded. For the last two days you have been blissfully unaware of any other wagon. Despite this the last two days have perhaps been the hardest. You are now definitely in enemy territory and the signs of Indian activity are all around you. Both of you have kept a close grip on your guns the whole time.
After you decamped this morning and set of you became aware of a wagon travelling ahead of you a ways. You would catch the occasional glimpse as you entered a more sparsely wooded area. Whoever it is that is driving the wagon does not look to skilled at doing so. You often see them having to run the wagon back onto the trial or replacing items that have slipped off. It became a subject of some mirth between you as to how long it would be before you caught them up.
What neither of you bet on was to come round a sharp bend and see in the distance a burning wagon.

Sebastian and Pericles

When you set of from Cheyenne for the hills you were part of a small adhoc wagon train that formed the first night out of Cheyenne. The general idea was strength in numbers. For the first stage of your journey this was a precaution that was not needed. You passed through the plains of the Dakota Territory without a shot fired. That was not to say your journey was not entirely without incident one wagon in particular was prone to minor accidents. These minor prangs became quite regular and the group decided that this family should be left to fend for themselves. Thus the small train pulled a way ahead of them just before you got to the Hills.
When the wagon train entered the Hills pace slowed due to the twisted nature of the trail and the steep nature of some of the inclines. Despite this the train was making better time than when it was on the plains with the greenhorns the decision to leave seemed to be the right one. The train kept a watchful eye out for hostile Indians as there were signs of recent Indian activity in the area. Thankfully no attack seemed to materialise however that did not stop disaster striking in another way.
You managed to lose control of your team during an awkward manoeuvre. You lost a wheel. Yours was the rear most wagon and the rest of the train refused to stop and wait thus you were left to fix the wagon on your own. It was during the repairs that you spotted a column of smoke rising above the tree line from just down the trail.

Pericles checked his revolver again.
Fire of any kind in this terrain could be bad... but he would be loathe to abandon the wagon (and his equipment) in a potentially hostile situation. His instincts would be to hasten the repairs and then investigate by proceeding down the trail with the wagon.

[ooc: how close to finishing the repairs are we when we spot the smoke?]

Gungrave Sam Draws Solarus, his Long colt Revolver, and looks around.

"This is not good.." He mummers in a smooth voice. He does not slow down his wagon, If something is going on he wants to be in the know. If that has any people left, Sam thinks he can help them, If Indians are around, He thinks he can beat them.

OCC: Sam has a saddle horse and Mule so he will be riding alongside Gungrave since he prefers to be alone.

Sampson draws his Remington and cocks both hammers. He looks intensely at Gungrave and then spurs his horse towards the fire trotting slow enough to allow his mule to keep up.

The two sams
The two sams pick up the pace by mutual unspoken consent. A conservative estimate of the time it would take to get to the burning wagon would be ten minutes. What ever occured would probably be over by the time you get there despite both men knowing this they do not let up their guard.
Both men mentally count down time between sightings of the wagon. Eventually the two men find them selves at a bend in the trail. Their estimates put the burnging wagon a few hundred yards beyond this bend. Despite only knowing each other for just over two weeks the two men co ordinate their action well. Gungrave halts the team short of the bend and Sampson rides forward to the bend and takes a look down trail.
The wagon is all but burnt out now. There appears to be the burnt corpse of a man slumped over the fron of the wagon. What looks like most of the victims worldly goods are spread across the trail. Sampson cant be sure but one of the ladies dresses on the floor might contain a corpse. One thing sampson can be sure of is the Sioux Brave currantly knelt on the ground close to the wagon.

Pericles and sebastian
OOC i would like to hear from sabastions player before continuing.

Sampson releases the Mule's lead from the the saddle of his horse and with his shotgun drawn he spurs his horse to a full trott bearing down on the Sioux warrior.

OOC: Sorry zoncxs he is quite overconfident and impulsive... :). chimchim is the Brave 100 yards away?

The two of you pack your gear in record time and head down the trail at speed. For most of the trip you are aware of the smoke only. Your wagon hurtles round a corner to reveal a scene of unspeakable horror.
The wagon is almost burnt out now. There is a burnt corpse of what was probably once a man still slumped in the drivers seat. On the ground are the families belongings and the blood drenched corps of a woman. Just of the trail you see a sight that moves even your cold heart a child is pinned to a tree mutilated. knelt beside the corpse of the woman is a Sioux brave. He is examining the floor. The wagon is still some way off, as you close the brave gets up and moves to another spot and begins examining the ground.
Beyond the wagon you see a rider emerge from cover and charge head long towards the wagon.

As sampson begins his charge the brave stands up and moves a few feet and bends down to examine the floor, curious indeed. As you close you notice the brave is noty painted for war. He apears to be atired for hunting. He is also quite young barely out of childhood.

ooc. you are about 150 yards to the wagon.
