[DF] Thief and Weaponmaster (Knife/Main-Gauche)

Hi guys

I was creating a Dungeon Fantasy Thief character with the template from DF1 and the Powerups from DF3/11. In the latter DF source books it says that you can take Weaponmaster (Knife/Main-Gauche) yet in the template in DF1 you are only allowed to take Thrown Weapon (Knife). Why does the template omit Knife as a primary or secondary weapon skill yet the later expansions allow you to take said Weapon Master specialty?

The Thief template does not have Knife??? Simply add it! IMO is very in genre.

The template has Shortsword and Main-Gauche which both allow weapons that WM (Knife/Main-Gauche) would apply too.

From a Munchkins point of view, it doesn't make sense to use a Knife at Shortsword -3 or Main-Gauche -3... What am I missing?

Or is this meant for the instance where you "gizmo" a knife out of thin air?

The Long Knife can be used with Shortsword skill. Knife-Wheels, Rondels, Sais, Slashing-Wheels, Stilletos and Main-Gauches can be use with Main-Gauche skill (Also Deer Antlers and Juttes but I'm not sure they count as Knives).

Various large knifes sit on the border so the same weapon can be used with either the Knife Skill or the Shortsword skill.

When you take Weapon Master(Specific Weapon) it cover any use of that weapon regardles of skill

so Mick has Weapon Master(Large Knife) and it would count even if Mick were throwing the knife with Thrown Weapon (Knife) skill parrying with Main-Gauche skill or attacking with the Knife skill as long as Mick where using a Large knife. Mick picks up a Dagger well he can still use his skills with it, but doesn't get the Weapon Master bonus cause it not a Large Knife.

Which leads to the question: Why is it WM (Knife) and not WM (Shortsword)?

My guess cause then you might assume at the longer ended of the scale which can't be thrown or use the Main-Gauche skill...
