Exploring a room and rolling the color of monster base

Lets say I am red and my wife is Purple

I roll an orange, since there is no orange player can I select any color (purple,red,orange,yellow,green,etc) as the monster base or is it limited to the colors in play by actual players? (red and purple in my example)

I read the forums but there seems to be different answers.

You must choose a color belonging to a player.
