Arizona has the Chief Mine Inspector as an elected position. In 2014 there was no organized opposition to the incumbent but there was 18,000 write ins. Some of those were probably for Ian Kobe. He had an interesting campaign slogan.

"A vote for Ian Kobe is a vote for an AZ with less Draculas!" [sic] and laments that children cannot play in abandoned copper mines because Joe Hart has not cleaned out the vampire dens.

"It was flying at a very low altitude and with low speed, which makes interception by fighters difficult," he added.

This is interesting to know, though presumably the backup would be an intercept by helicopter.

They certainly took a circuitous route to get there - Hungary (next door to Romania) north through Slovakia into Poland, then back south presumably over Romania and finally landing in Bulgaria... which while it's also next door to Romania, is actually further from the Transylvania region. Unless the plane dropped off a passenger while flying over Romania... Was it over that airspace after sundown, perchance?
