Can also be invasive species. Around here, Eastern Red Cedar is the culprit. A fully infested 80 acre place can have hundreds of trees of all sizes. A larger one is estimated to put out 50 gallons per day of water. May not be as much water as corn per acre but the trees operate year round. Plus the pollen makes life miserable for folks allergic to the stuff. Some of it was self inflicted. A bunch were planted as wind rows after the dust bowl since they tolerate dry conditions well. They were fruitful and multiplied. Birds eat the seeds and then fly for miles before dropping the bits that grow. Fences and native trees are frequent bird resting places. If left alone, a native tree will soon have a cedar grove under it and if left unchecked, can die from the competition. Plus they burn green. Fun during wildfire season.

I admit I didn't know corn sweat was that significant. But then again, I both grew up and have done most of my gardening in areas that weren't all that far from a desert.
Just looked it up. Humidity where I grew up is currently listed as "ideal." And it's just three percent higher than the nearby desert.
