Default Dice Of Doom: GURPS Review

The guys over at Dice of Doom have posted a pretty solid review of GURPS, so I just figured I'd mention it.

http://diceofdoom.com/blog/2011/08/gurps-review/

It sounds like they put some honest work into reviewing it, which is cool, AND they include a write up for "Rainbow Dash" from "My Little Pony" as a bonus. :)

Zombie Caveman Kilt Wearing Ninjas With Lasers?

Sounds like something for the Krommnicient one to come up with.

They describe it as a 'British' game - I wonder if they are getting their Steve Jacksons mixed up?

Cheers,
Dan

I was wondering about that, too. It seems the only reasonable explanation. Yet they are well aware that it's from the same SJG that does Munchkin and Zombie Dice ... possibly they don't know there are two?

They know. They also have podcasts that deal with GURPS. They think combats take forever, but the point is somewhat undercut by their not using Feints and Deceptive Attacks.

I think they missed the whole point of the equation for the truncated table listing falling velocity. It's there to allow a GM to expand the table to his requirements, so SJGames doesn't have to have the table fill a whole page, or pages!... ignoring terminal velocity, the GM should have used the equation to pre-calculate the 1000' falling damage before any airship stuff happened, so they wouldn't have needed to bust out the calculator mid-game.

He does fall into the usual trap of "There's no monster manual." Unless you count the Creatures of the Night series, the book titled Monsters, the several monster-specific books from 3rd edition, the bestiaries for Fantasy and Space, and the monsters included within the genre books and the basic set. And Horror, which is about how to make your monsters especially scary.

Aside from that, there's no monster manual.

They reviewed the Basic Set. There's not much of a bestiary there.

True, but you get even less from the PHB and DMG of Dungeons and Dragons. The Basic Set really is one of the best, most complete of its type out there.

The most legitimate complaint in the review is that the Basic Set gives very little GM guidance and tips--which is understandable, given the GU part of GURPS. The D&D DMG is probably at least 60% telling you how to DM in their setting and system.

Except that the Monstrous Compendium is one of the core rulebooks. Nothing like that for GURPS.
