Default 8G vs 10G slug damage

I noticed when converting shotgun damage from shotshell to slugs you would get the same damage code for an 8 gauge shotgun as you would a 10 gauge. Is that right? Seems the 8 gauge should be doing more, but since its shotshell damage is 2d-1 for both, the 8 gauge just has more pellets, you get the same damage code for a slug on both.

If that bothers you, rather than using the general rule ("multiply shot damage by four"), reverse the solid -> shot formula in HT (p.172), and use the higher of that or x4 damage. That should give reasonable results assuming the shot load in question is the GURPS-standard 00 buck.

The problem is that the table/formula presented in High-Tech doesn't even conform to that rule. At 9 projectiles (the vast majority of 12G shells), the damage is listed at 1/3th that of a solid projectile, not 1/4th. So which is right, the table or the x4 from basic?

8-bore solid conical slub with 1257grains (81g) at 1500fps is about 8d.

Common 10g loads these days seem to be about 50 grams at 1280fps. that's about 5d+1 or so.

The 8-bore slugs seem to have been designed to kill large African game, or possibly T-Rex.

So I am also perplexed when it comes to the slug damage that 12/76 (1d+2) or 12/89 (perhaps 2d-1 ??) cartridges could do.
They do 5d+1 like 10 gauge ?
