A few years ago, I started occasionally buying chunks of raw tuna flesh and cooking them in a little lemon juice. Astonishingly good flavor, a lot more subtle than even the best water packed canned albacore. Unfortunately, my doctor later told me I should remove fish that were high on the food chain from my diet, and that apparently includes tuna, as well as shark, the other pish I especially like. (Though I'd grown cautious about shark; at least three times now, I've bought shark, cooked it, and found that it had a strong ammonia taste that made it inedible.)

I've eaten raw fish, but the flavor has never grown on me, I'm afraid. By now I'm concluded that I'm never going to learn to enjoy it and given up the struggle.

The level of mercury in high end sea predators is staggering and growing every day. Though I suppose if you don't mind the accompanying brain damage and organ failure, you shouldn't let that stop you from eating the stuff.

Ah, but I suppose one of the Disciples of Kromm will tell us that he has genetically re-engineered his mind and body to filter out such petty concerns as mercury. Or something like that.

Kromm's secret defense against too much mercury from sushi is . . . his amazing wallet! It rarely has enough money to buy sushi often enough for the mercury to matter. (That's just a quirk of Montréal: there's really no "cheap" sushi here -- at least, not that I'd attempt to eat.)

Does Kromm's Amazing Wallet also protect you from being a Canadiens Fan??

Kromm's lack of interest in ice hockey does that. I used to care . . . then the last time the Habs won the Stanley Cup, the riot smashed windows and chucked crap through the holes. After that, my feelings could be summed up as "Screw these guys if they can't be fans without being idiots."

My wallet does, however, keep me away from live music venues, which is sad.

It's a sad fact that riots like that disgust the sensible fans and leave the sport to the idiots. We have that problem in Sweden to some extent - although not as bad as that. Our riots tend to be more of the "reclaim the streets" variant.

Live music venues are only useful if you can get into the middle and closer rows where you can actually see the band.

Yeah, I realize. I just have fond memories of when my wife was the ticket girl at the local alternative nightclub. I saw a lot of acts from as close to the stacks as my ears could stand. :)
