I have to admit that it bothers the hell out of me that the Blue Planet Kickstarter has that Werner Herzog quote “What would an ocean be without a monster lurking in the dark? It would be like sleep without dreams.”

Herzog was born in 1942. Steinbeck was born in 1902. So Herzog was clearly quoting (or plagiarizing) Steinbeck, who said (so much less clumsily), "An ocean without unnamed monsters would be like sleep without dreams."
