I was once in a campaign were the main characters were all sorcerors, wizards or some other kind of spellcasters. Each of them had a small retinue of servants (mundane characters). As time went by and your main character got more powerful, his retinue would grow in quantity (not in quality in means of better character). You could equip them better but the retinues never grew much in experience.
It was fun up to a point when you were controlling complete armies. Sometimes we played out battles using Warhammer tabletop-like setup with the only magic users on your side were the PCs and the troops were your retinue. |

In my current game, each player gets 2 or 3 PCs at the start of every mission, but that's because it's almost purely tactical, highly lethal, and the PCs are therefore expendable. I've had 2 out of 3 of a player's PCs OOA at once, but never all of them, so it appears to be working about right.
