I can't add anything to RL examples but check out the Kzin from Larry Nivan's Known Space. He has been writing in that setting since the early 60s.

I gave up on that a long time ago. Same thing with Canis lupus, really. Nobody who isn't a vertebrate biologist actually cares or will believe you.

Felis domesticus is what I learned in 9th grade, and I haven't had a biology class since. Wikipedia suggests there's some momentum behind Felis silvestris catus as well.
