Apologies if this has been asked before but I didn't see any related posts...
I'm a Scoutmaster for a Boy Scout Troop and am looking for games for my scouts. I'm especially interested in games they can play on campouts in the evening or when the weather is bad and shuts our other activities down. Are there any SJ games that are waterproof? I'm thinking plastic cards or pieces without paper playing surfaces. The kids range from 11 to 17, so they need to be appealing to a wide range of players. I would also like to avoid anything with a lot of small pieces. Oh, and if there are any discounts available that would be great too. Magic, The Gathering has a great program for Scout Troops. Unfortunately, that's probably a little advanced for my 11 year olds. Thanks in advance! |

I am not an SJGames employee, but have you considered the dice games? Dino Stomp and Buck Hunt have proven popular among the Cubs I know and have at least been played by Scouts as well.

I expect Zombie Dice would appeal.

In every respect except the cardboard container. Trophy Buck should work (nylon pouch). Cthulhu Dice would need to be re-packaged.

This is a really cool question I'd never thought of before. I did a Google search for "waterproof card games," and learned that Amazon and Walmart both have categories for waterproof card games, and Board Game Geek has a section for beerproof and waterproof games (generally dice games). Board Game Geek also suggests multi-sleeving cards, but that would probably get expensive and/or awkward, and I'm sure there's a chance water could still get in...

The simplest way to make a game water resistant is by laminating the cards, though that's just resistant, not proof. Typically you'd use either a laminating machine or laminating pouches. I don't have much experience with such products so I can't give specific recommendations.
True waterproof cards require the cardstock itself to be waterproof (generally plastic that has the color infused directly into the material) and would probably require sending the files to a specialized printer. |

Going outside the Steve Jacksom Games space, most of Chip Theory Games' output is waterproof (except for boxes and rulebooks—I've played Too Many Bones in the rain). As well as raising the cost, this makes them even harder to recycle than most boardgames.
