With zombies, you usually have them distributed in a range from lone walkers and small groups to functionally unlimited hordes, so you want both - fortifications so that you can stop running, and the ability to start running again when you need to.


EDIT: One nice thing about zombies is that once your base is abandoned, they typically don't care about holding or destroying it. Unless you razed it yourself or larger dynamics are in play, you might be able to go back.
