Um, Calhoun and his cronies almost started a Civil War, not Jackson. I have no clue what you think Jackson should have done, but his unwillingness to back down was what forced South Carolina to reconsider their stance. Sure, "cooler heads" prevailed, but they would have never cooled off if Jackson had backed down.

More or less. Specifically, "We're PROUD of this guy, and APPROVE of his stance wrt people we don't currently want to consider people."

*shrugs* The only thing I don't understand is the logic behind it. The dollar wasn't the major international currency it is today back in '28 (at least I think...I want to say the turning point was after WW2 with the Bretton Woods System, but I confess not having much depth of knowledge here), so it doesn't seem to be a message to other nations. Anyway, since the only thing more futile than having a political debate online is having a political debate online where the events happened a century ago, I'll leave it at that.

If I recall correctly, Andrew Jackson dismantled the National Bank and instituted a fiscal policy that led to the nation's first major financial panic. The crisis didn't occur until he was out of office, though, and so his successor, Van Buren, got all the blame.

But, like Reagan, he was a popular president who cast a long shadow. And he was played by Charlton Heston in The Buccaneer. Which may not be a good reason to put him on currency, but if James K. Polk had been played by Charlton Heston, I'll bet that people would have a lot more respect for him.

I'm tired, and I'm starting to ramble. Can you tell?
