Re: GURPS Steampunk 1: Settings and Style
This is a very good starting book for introducing the line. I especially like the addressing of the "punk" part of steampunk and the social unrest of the 19th Century.
I prefer crunch-heavy titles these days, but I'm assuming that'll be coming with part 2, as hard as it is to wait for something you're excited about. |

Re: GURPS Steampunk 1: Settings and Style
What I like is having an updated or new genre book before the DFRPG hits the shelves. At that point a bunch of people will be taking a fresh look at GURPS overall and seeing more possibilities is I think a good thing.

That was also a theme of the original GURPS Steampunk, back in 2000. . . .

One of the few GURPS 3e hardbacks. Well written, as I recall, by some talented dude. Wonder whatever became of him?

Re: GURPS Steampunk 1: Settings and Style
I hope that everyone understands that this book is a mixture of new and (updated) old material, the latter being the reason for the "Additional Material" credits. Things like Bill's notes on the "punk" aspect of things were too important to leave out, Jo gets the credit for that Shocking Revelations Table, and so on.
I just took a step back and gave it all a framework inspired by bigger 4th ed genre books like Horror and Bill's Fantasy; looking at all the different ways that writers and readers have approached "steampunk" (before and since it turned into a fashion subculture), and addressed how each could be the basis for a game. But don't worry, the line will get around to the steam-powered computers and hat-mounted spy cameras.

Re: GURPS Steampunk 1: Settings and Style
It didn't, and no apologies are needed. I just wanted to make it explicit. My discussion of how "punk" fits into the Victorian era was one of the bits of that book I was especially proud of. . . .
