area effect in tactical combat
Just a quick question, as I can't seem to find this in the rules and I'm not sure how to handle this.
Our group would like to start experimenting with tactical combat and some of the players have area effect powers. How big are the areas on the hex map? Let's work with an example. X has an affliction with emanation and area effect 1, that's a 2-yard radius. Does this mean: a) his ability affects the hex he is standing in and all 6 adjacent hexes, let's call this the first ring of hexes (total = 1 hex + 6 hexes in first ring = 7 hexes) OR b) his ability also affects the second ring of hexes (total = 1 hex + first ring 6 hexes + second ring 12 hexes = 19 hexes) Thanks! |

Re: area effect in tactical combat
The answer is A, though I'm struggling to find a page reference for you. It's for magic spells, but there is a picture on p. 239.

Re: area effect in tactical combat
Yes. the answer is A.
Just use the area as the number of hexes you count out from the target hex. If it's where you are standing, then a 2yd would be your hex & one ring around you. If its a 4yd area then it's your hex & 3 rings around you. |

Re: area effect in tactical combat
An additional question-
What's the general formula for the number of hexes (the area) in a ring of radius R?

Close. It's 3r^2 -3r + 1

Cheers. Now I just have to remember it when it's actually needed.

Re: area effect in tactical combat
"In an area crowded with enemy targets (i.e. 1 per hex), how many would be affected by my 8-hex radius AE attack?" mainly.
Extrapolate from there for less dense gatherings.
