Heroic Charioteering Culture
One thing I observed is that there are no charioteering cultures prominent in fantasy. That is a gap as much heroic poetry comes from Celts, Homeric Greeks, Vedic Warriors, etc. There is a surprising amount of possibility for that. Has anyone made a fantasy game with chariots playing a major part?

Re: Heroic Charioteering Culture
Glorantha (Runequest) is Bronze Age, though I think many major cultures/nations have moved past charioteering as a main weapon in their armies (as opposed to a historical/ceremonial relic). But they do have chariot racing and the Drive Chariot skill. And you could always roll back the campaign time from the assumed default.

Re: Heroic Charioteering Culture
This seemed like a really good experiment. Now, I'm not a fantasy person, so I'm going to post this ChatGPT4 creation. I'd like to have it analyzed by people who find Fantasy more interesting:
Culture Name: Raeltoran Parallel Designation: Raeltora-1 Quantum: 4 Mana Level: Moderate TL: 3 Cultural Features: Raeltoran society is structured around the arts of charioteering and horses. At an early age, children are taught the basics of chariot driving, horse care, and navigation. Mastery of these skills is considered a rite of passage in this culture, akin to becoming an adult. A developed class system has emerged, with the highest regarded being the "Chariot Lords" who are the best of charioteers. Centrum Zone: Yellow Brief History: Raeltora-1 deviates from Homeline's history in 2023 BC, with the development of the spoked wheel in the steppes of Eurasia. This advancement in wheel technology happened hundreds of years ahead of our timeline, sparking a chariot revolution that propagated far and wide across this parallel. Over the centuries, societies across the globe restructured around the use of chariots for all aspects of life from warfare to trade to agriculture, leading to the establishment of the Raeltoran culture. Charioteering in Raeltora-1 is not only a means of transportation but also a form of communication, sport, and a cornerstone of their spirituality. Chariots are decorated with elaborate designs representing the history and status of the family or clan to which the driver belongs. The use of specific symbols, colors, and even the arrangement of horses can carry complex meanings understood throughout the culture. The Raeltoran era equivalent to our Middle Ages saw the formation of Chariot Orders, knightly fraternities committed to codes of charioteering conduct, chivalry, and regional defense. These orders helped shape the politics and power structures of Raeltora-1, leading to a highly feudal society where land, power, and prestige are measured by one's skill in charioteering and the quality of their horses. Political Structures: The Raeltoran civilization has developed unique political structures based on their charioteering culture. Territories are ruled by a High Charioteer, selected by a council of Chariot Lords. These lords earned their titles through impressive feats of charioteering, and it is the ambition of many Raeltorans to ascend to such a rank. Society is further stratified with Charioteers, Wheelwrights (artisans who craft the chariots), and Stablemasters (who tend to the prized horses). At the bottom of the hierarchy are the Footmen who serve in various capacities but lack the status of charioteering. Religion: Their main deity, Rael, is the patron god of horses, chariots, and travelers. They believe that Rael gifted the spoked wheel to the people, enabling their way of life. Festivals are marked with grand chariot races, and religious rites often involve processions of decorated chariots. The highest religious authorities are the Chariot-Priests, who combine spiritual leadership with remarkable charioteering skill. Adventure Seeds: An ancient and highly valuable chariot has been stolen. The players are hired to retrieve it before an important festival. The High Charioteer's only child, who is expected to participate in the grand chariot race of Rael, has disappeared. The players must find and bring back the young heir before the race day. The council of Chariot Lords is gathering to elect a new High Charioteer. Political tensions are high, and the players might find themselves embroiled in intrigue and power plays. A significant change in the annual migration patterns of the horses has left many Raeltorans worried. Is it a sign of Rael's disapproval or a hint of a greater threat coming their way? The players need to investigate. A rare artifact said to grant divine charioteering skills is rumored to be hidden in an ancient and perilous labyrinth. Can the players survive its traps and retrieve the artifact? |
