1 works, nerfing templates to make a point budget is not fun, it's just "Star Trek aliens are humans with a rubber forehead." nonsense.

I see a trend, but the poll remains open if anyone else wants to vote. Probably posting the new Question tomorrow or Monday.

G'annan of Frolec Question IV

Here's another 'two questions in separate formats' one:

First question - What sort of soldier is G'annan? (Basing this on the lenses offered for the Soldier template in the 4e conversion of GURPS Historical Folks, p44, hosted at RPK's MyGURPS.com. There are a couple of optional lenses, but they should probably go in a later Question to avoid confusion.)

1. Archer (Also covers crossbowmen, slingers, and with some modification, missile-spell specialists, riflemen, and any other troops whose main job is to kill from well-beyond melee range.)

2. Heavy Infantry (Heavier armour and shield, if any, bigger weapons, frequently the anchors of a formation. Teal'c in canon was probably closest to Heavy Infantry, of these options.)

3. Light Infantry (Lightly armed and armoured - if armoured at all; generally skirmishers and sometimes scouts if the cavalry wasn't available, as well as being secondary missile troops. Generally faster and more manoeuverable than heavy infantry.)

4. Heavy Cavalry (Any troops that fight while mounted count, whether horses, camels, elephants, flying carpets, or whatever. Generally used to break up enemy formations.)

5. Light Cavalry (Like light infantry, more lightly equipped and more manoeuverable than the heavies. Often used as scouts. Frequently have smaller mounts, though not necessarily much smaller, unless they use different species, e.g. light flying cavalry on wyverns or hippogryphs and heavy flying cavalry on dragons.)

6. Something else (please specify).

Please remember to include the number of your preferred option when you vote.

Second question - The last Question had a template which had an optional SM+1/ST+5 lens on it (with an additional cost of 45 points). Do you want that lens applied to G'annan? Please answer with YES in all caps or NO in all caps.

*******

Answer: On the first question, 3 gets three votes and wins, 1 got two votes and 5 got one; on the second question, NO gets for votes and wins.

For my answers I'm going to have to go with:
Quote:
3. Light Infantry (Lightly armed and armoured - if armoured at all; generally skirmishers and sometimes scouts if the cavalry wasn't available, as well as being secondary missile troops. Generally faster and more manoeuverable than heavy infantry.)
And
Quote:
NO
Mostly for the reason it would make him impossible to hide.

3: Light Infantry, but with an adjustment made to the lens - he should probably use a staff or spear that shoots magical projectiles, so his weapon skills would be Staff or Spear for melee and Innate Attack (or whatever you use for staff weapons) for ranged.

Light cavalry is honestly tempting, considering the Gerudo were horse archers in Ocarina of Time, but I don't think such a character would integrate quite as readily into SG1 - also, the staff weapon seems like it would be cumbersome to shoot from horseback (being comparable to a full-size rifle), and I really want G'annan using one of those.

NO, for the same reason as Kessendeja (also, being SM+0 means he'll fit in with SG1 more readily, as he won't absolutely tower over everyone).

1,3, or 5.

Is a staff weapon an archer or light infantry? I feel like it could go either way.

Cavalry is cool, though I think for best effect he'd be more hybrid than true cavalry. A dragoon of sorts.

NO.

Its 1/2D is close to what you'll get with a sling (which would be more Archer than Light Infantry), although it seems to be more often used in throwing-weapon range (which would be more Light Infantry than Archer). I'd say the rank-and-file Jaffa in the Stargate series are arguably more akin to light infantry than archery, engaging at close range with a mix of ranged and melee, although a lot of that might just be due to the cinematic nature of the show.

1 works for me, with a Staff Weapon equivalent.

NO

Since our staff weapons are a lot more variable than the ones in the show, I'd say that it depends on the individual weapon and to a degree the individual soldier (skills and advantages geared to one or the other).

Poll remains open; depending on how much debate and voting there is, I might close it on Wednesday or Thursday, or not until Friday.

G'annan of Frolec Question V

OK, G'annan is a Light Infantry soldier. Now, the Soldier template has two optional lenses, either of which might fit G'annan. (Canon Teal'c arguably had both, largely because of how the show was written as opposed to what actually made sense in-story.)

1. Sergeant.

2. Noble.

3. Neither.

4. Something else (please specify).

Please remember to include the number(s) of your preferred option(s) when you vote.

*******

Answer: Alright, I'm breaking the tie in favour of 1; so, G'annan was a Sergeant in the Light Infantry before being assigned to spy work.
