I mean, honestly gonna be fairly consistently running around TL 3&4 worlds instead of the characters own TL 5 world, so hes gonna need to be able to press his own ammo anyway.

One thing he might want to consider is that the sort of ammo we're talking about is going to weigh about double what .45 Colt or .44-40 ammo would, and thus he'll only get 10-11 rounds to the pound, rather than 20-23 to the pound. Re-using the cases and handloading will save a bit of weight, but it'll be proportionally about the same, so the weight penalty for the more powerful gun will be the same either way - half the ammo.

So, I just noticed while as I said in the ammunition table it claims .577 revolver to be 15.6 x 20mmR, .577 Express and Nitro express are 14.7 x 70mmR and 14.7 x 79mmR. I don't really understand that, that first number refers to the diameter of the bullet right? so any .577 should be 14.7 right?

Ya, that's fine in this case.

The metric designation is the bore diameter, followed by the case length, both in millimetres. The actual name (".577 Nitro Express" and such) is often fairly inexact, for any number of reasons - marketing, to avoid confusion with another very similar round, because the bore is being measured differently (the US and European gun makers use different conventions for defining bore diameter), or by naming the round after the bullet diameter rather than the bore diameter (the bullets are slightly bigger than the bore in order to ensure a tight seal). It's all a huge mess.

[QUOTE=fula farbrorn;2317163]Does anybody have good advice for using Coles spreadsheet to stat up stuff like 7N39 ?

If you want, email me with your email address (click on my name and there is a link to emailing me direct) and I'll send you two spreadsheets.

Spreadsheet 1 simplified Doug's spreadsheet so that you need only enter in four things:

1) Bullet Mass in grains
2) Bullet velocity in feet per second
3) Bullet diameter
4) Aspect ratio

If you don't know the aspect ratio, approximate it with:

1:1 = perfect sphere
2:1 = pistol caliber bullets
3:1 = Rifle caliber bullets

That's it - that's all you need for the simplified version of Doug's spreadsheet.

Spreadsheet 2 uses the same approach from the simplified data entry from spreadsheet 1. This sheet however, was an attempt to fill in as much data for as many real world black powder bullets as my reference books contained.

Some of the bullet data in the second spreadsheet is incomplete, such as the .22-15 Stevens entry, where I could not find Muzzle velocity. But in general, it has sufficient information that should help you to wing it for weapons not listed in either of GURPS HIGH TECH or ADVENTURE GUNS.

Also, if you want the GDF for ADVENTURE GUNS, let me know. I've created the data file for use with GURPS CHARACTER ASSISTANT so that it could be used with that program. And yes, I've run some GURPS OLD WEST campaigns on FANTASY GROUNDS. ;)

Someday, I'm going to map out a few "Old West" towns using the material from WHITEWASH CITY for use with FANTASY GROUNDS and run a full fledge campaign again.

The last campaign I ran? Involved a Train on the Kansas Pacific Railroad line between Kansas and Denver. Had some fun with that one.

Ah well...

Have fun.

As a historical note 3 to 1 is probably okay for black powder bullets but when smokeless powder comes in you get boat-tailed spitzers at 4 to 1 or more for "match" bullets.

I suspect you're right.

If the handloader's bibles weren't so darned expensive, I'd pick one up! Part of me wants to wander through flea markets to see if I can find an old handloader's bible somewhere. Then I'd snag a copy cheap. But I'm not going to pay 80+ bucks for something that won't matter much game wise. ;)

Try looking for a used book store. There are still a few around, and are both probably useful for this purpose, and IMHO deserving of support.
