I'll concede that a mage unsticking ships and making record-breaking trips around the continent is "easily aided" in the sense that it is straightforward and might make economic or military sense to do this. I don't think sticking a mage, or even a wand, on every ship is an easy solution to the general difficulties of shiphandling and navigation. So perhaps I'm not really sure what question is being posed by the OP.
