The roach's other weakness ... Fire.

I don't have to penetrate that armor if I can hit you two or three times with an FT.

And I've seen div 5 Mid-sized with linked FT's ... a mod of 'Wild Bills Wallet Beater' from VG1.

Also, dropped weapon will tear up those flimsy tires ... JDs, SDs and even DSPs are common ...

And a single mine counter will pop all four tires about half the time. Hope nobody takes a MD. With remote detonated mines ...

Seriously, is there going to be a Div 5 design without a weakness?

No, and fire/tires are probably the most common.

Yep - and the opposing player would not know the exact schematics in a duel. 50 points of front armor in Div 5 is totally unexpected.

But by all means, if you think you can beat the Roach, post you own designs :)

TBH, I've generally found the best division 5 vehicle designs to be trikes. cheaper engines, the need to buy one less tire (allowing you to afford tougher individual tires), plus the wider firing arc you get with a L/R weapon are all huge pluses. I'll have to see if I've still got one of the designs I used to use.

Division 5 is definitely a Rock-Scissors-Paper division. You could design something that would beat the Roach but that would have a weakness too. You design something to beat that one and it will have a weakness that the Roach will exploit.

Sometimes you just throw scissors and hope your opponent takes paper !!!

That is essentially a design flaw for any tournament style game.

It's interesting that it emerges in High Guard, but I know that the fleet selections for the Federation Commander tournaments are being tweaked to avoid this sort of thing.

On the other hand... outguessing my friends back in the day never got old. ("Will they get fireproofing...? Naaaaaaaaah!")

Quoting (and adapting from your blog) "Games will, however, have an exponentially greater number of tactical decisions if they feature multiple cars on each side"

I think a good game would be Division 5 with four players, each of them having two vehicles. That way, you could take one Rock and one Scissors (or whatever) and see what happens.

Or you could have four players ... two teams of two each ... and have them choose their vehicles separately; so they don't know what they teammate is choosing ...

That would be interesting.
