Default Dragon Magic is also skin deep

Dragons and gargoyles innate armor is innately magical and hence also protects their wings. This really only matters against staff occult zaps of course.

You see the resolution of the game system? Look up, way above you.

I believe both gargoyles and dragons have natural armour, since nothing to the contrary appears in the rules.

There is that one bit of magic attributed to gargoyles, and that's the ability to levitate (ITL 79). They may think they're flying because they are too stupid to realize their wings are too small -- I've always found that explanation hilarious.

One could speculate, if so inclined, that their levitation enchantment is built into their wings, hence making these appendages self-powered magical items. If not that, then we have to consider them magical creatures in and of themselves, and should get whatever benefits being "magical" confers. And in that case occult attacks would not bypass their armor.

Don't gargoyle use their gallbladders to levitate?

Dang, not what I expected. I thought you'd suggest amputating gargoyle wings and them strapping them on to levitate/fly :)

I always imagined the gallbladder made gall, and the gall spread through the body, and did the levitating. But who knows.

The liver makes the bile, and the gallbladder stores it and squirts it into the digestive system when needed. Maybe gargoyle livers have some value as well?

A copy of "Gray's Anatomy of Magical Creatures" would be a valuable resource in what could become a very gruesome campaign.
