Re: [HT] Small Calibre firepower
The 22 lr and its magnum cousins will kill. Its plenty deadly enough, even in GURPS. You just need to use HP bullets and hit the vitals (1d+2 pi x3, avg of 15). Its very light ammo weight, low rcl, and high capacity magazines make it useful in survival situations. Special ops types often include a scope 22 pistol for survival kits; birds and small mammals are easily taken by a hunter using such a weapon, and it can kill humans if necessary. But of course, this is not your first choice for self-defense, as I'm sure everyone would agree.
In certain types of zombie hunting situations, however, where only brain hits count, its perfectly useful, with an extra-powerful AP bullet: 2d-1(2)pi-. Avg damage is 6, -1 for skull is 5, x4 multiplier is 20. Yes, if the Unliving mod applies, it's only 4 points, but Vulnerability (Head Shots x4) is common on B-movie zombies and takes it back to one-shot kill territory. YZMV. In this scenario, a belt-fed AR15 firing hot 22lr or 22 magnum rounds might be an excellent purpose built zombie hunting gun. There are weapons like this for sale which use 100 round belts; otherwise, 50-rd drums are quite common. Slap on a good optic, silencer, and a 12 gauge under barrel and you are set to kill the shamblers. Yes, its munchkinny and kinda silly, but what else do you do in RPGs? |

Re: [HT] Small Calibre firepower
If you're hitting the vitals, you may as well use ball or even AP. HP is only useful when you don't hit Skull or Vitals

Re: [HT] Small Calibre firepower
pi- bumped up to pi with HP. That gets around the 0.5 wounding mod, which is why you use HP.

Re: [HT] Small Calibre firepower
Yes, but the pi- 0.5 wounding mod does not have any effect when you shoot the vitals, which give 3x wounding to all piercing types

Oh, I see what you're saying. Yes, in the vitals case it doesn't matter.
