Default Weekly Job Role: GILTI

How do independent family owned taverns survive in a world of murder hobos and lesser monsters? Well first the lodge isn't a building standing all alone in the middle of a swamp with only a sign in an inhuman script with the figure of an octopus serving ale to advertise it. (The PCs would already be planing a siege, not a stay at this point.)

Second, even the most isolated tavern would be surrounded by and be the focus of a village, while those in towns and cities would be more or less respectable establishments. Anyone who attacks such a place should expect an entire community to react.

Thirdly, the innkeepers are part of a guild and hence their establishments are protected by the GILTI.

Guild of Inns, Lodges, & Taverns Inspector
Sam Bellum, Human, age 20
ST 9, DX 12, IQ 11, MA 10
Talents include: Business Sense, Detect Lies, Fencer, Horsemanship, Knife, Literacy
Language: Common
Weapon: Rapier (1d+1), Main Gauche (1d) (-1 to be hit with weapons in hand)
Attacks and Damage: Punch (1d-3)

Sam will only stay at establishments that advertise the GILT mark, as all others really aren't his business. Most of the time he'll just have dinner and a drink, stay the night, secretly take notes, and if all seems well just pay his bill and travel on the next day to another such establishment. Occasionally Sam will wait for a quiet moment, pull out his GILTI badge and demand to see the accounts for the tavern to ensure that they are paying the proper rate to the guild. If things get seriously out of hand then Sam will stand up from his seat in the corner and help protect his clients and their business.

It's an interesting idea. It's a bit jarringly modern -- what's next? Franchises? But I'm okay with anachronisms in Cidri.

I'd add Carousing to the typical tavern guild investigator, so that he fits in with the crowd better.

I'm reminded of Jack Vance's brilliant Maske:Thaery, in which the central character gets a job with Department Three: Hotel and Inn Inspectors.

Possibly add a GILTI kiosk where a traveler can find out where the next GILTI establishment is along their route. Kind of a AAA for Cidri. Being a GILTI approved establishment means getting those recommendations. Fall out of compliance and your customer count might go down plus the loss of the previously mentioned protection.

Just look for taverns with the GILT mark, and while you're there ask for the next one on your route. (GILTI is a specific job.)

Its here, right now.

Our Premiere Michellinda Touring Guide is made especially for international merchants, itinerant journeymen and long distance haulers who must travel routes unknown to them and are prey to the vagaries of local accommodations.

We use the classification rating system created by the Hansa League Merchant’s Guild of Cidri for their continental traders who have to go from country to country and want references they can trust.

There are several scholars who have done these compilations over the centuries: Michellinda Beauregard’s is our most popular and respected editor.

[This Rating System can be used by GMs to get a sense of the quality of Eating, Lodging, Stabling businesses. The rating goes from one star being POOR to five stars being BEST with N/A being Not Applicable. The GM need not rate everything and in fact might just assign one overall rating for the establishment. Prices are for Hansa League continent only and might not match prices on GM’s portion of Cidri.]

--------------------------

Christopher Rice has an article in Hexagram #10 page 34 called Inns and Taverns.
It lists whether it is good or bad, the services it delivers like stabling, bath, cleaning, food, entertainment, and perhaps luxuries. It also might list customer base.
