One of the other things you could do to make the spell a touch more useful while keeping the 1d-1 damage rating is increase the accuracy of the spell. "Accurate as a laser" makes a lot more sense to me than "Accurate as a fireball" or "Accurate as a lightning bolt".
Being able to reliably hit farther away is a reasonable thing for a highly focused missile spell the way I picture things.

Sure, but I'm not trying to rewrite or maximize the spell. I'm trying to figure out it's RAW "proper" damage & type, and update it where necessary. (as was demonstrated that it's type should be burn not imp.)
