Oh, you mean hex sides rather than adjacent hexes. That's really not the way I'd judge things, because what matters is how readily foes can enter your side/rear hexes (and how readily you can prevent them from doing so, by changing facing, putting barriers in the way, etc), and that's a function of how many of them there are (relative to your Front hexes). What we're looking at here is 4 Front, 4 Side, and 1 Rear. 4/9 Front works out to [18.67], while 1/9 Rear works out to [-14], for net [4.67], which round up to [5]. As before, this is arguably small enough to not need to be accounted for. The other logical default options with a triangular figure (on the hex map) would be:
Code:
 - F F -
- F C F -
 S C C S
- R R R -
or
Code:
 - R R -
- S C S -
 F C C F
- F F F -
or
Code:
 - R R -
- S C S -
 S C C S
- F F F -
The first is 4/9F and 3/9R, for [18.67] and [-31.5], net [-12.83]. The second is 5/9F and 2/9R, for [23.33] and [-24.5], net [-1.17]. The third is 3/9F and 2/9R, for [14] and [-24.5], net [-10.5]. Overall, the second one is the most "fair", at [-1.17] (rounds to [-1], basically a Quirk), but your suggestion, at [4.67] (rounds to [5]), is pretty fair too.

Innteresting! So, Varyon, why don't you consider the 2 Rear hexes I've bolded as Side hexes?

. - F F -
- F C F -
S C C S
-R R R -

As a large creature, I figured it could rotate enough to consider the 2 bold hexes as Sides vs. Rear...

Well, yeah, that's the case I analyzed at the start of the post, that I worked out was worth [4.67].

I'll also note here that, when doing ASCII-style art, the best way to do it to ensure it will look right (and the same for most everyone) is to surround it in [ code ] tags (without the spaces). For example, the one you mentioned would show up as:
Code:
   F F
  F C F
 S C C S
  S R S
If you quote this text, you'll be able to see exactly how it's written out. In addition to retaining leading spaces, that also forces a font that makes all characters (space, dash, letters, numbers, etc) take up the exact same amount of space (I typically write things out in Notepad to get the spacing right, then just copy and past it in; you can use any word processor, really, so long as you're using a font that has equal spacing for all characters). It does have the disadvantage that you cannot use bolding, italics, etc, however.

Aahhhh..I think I see it now. Well, your last configuration is what I was looking for, and I'm comfortable with that - since monsters are allowed to cheat. <eg> Thanks for making it clearer! Between the 2-hex-wide monsters, and now this 3-hex configuration figured out I'm set.
