Afflicted Insubstantial
Question for the Hive Mind:
My character has been afflicted with Insubstantial. My character has a Modular Ability for their attack powers. Can I create an attack with Affects Substantial to get past this inconvenience? Now, my belief is that: If this is a Beneficial Affliction, I cannot, since, probably, a team mate has put this on me and if they didn’t pay for Affects Substantial on the Insubstantial, I shouldn’t get that for free. If this is an offensive Affliction, I can, because I did not have control over this and am afflicted against my will, the Modular Ability suits this just fine. |

I'd allow you to add the Affects Substantial to your attack power only if you can also afford to pay the Affects Substantial enhancement for Insubstantiality, which is a +100% (IIRC). So, in other words, any such attack powers in your modular ability would cost you an additional 80 points (i.e., +100% to Insubstantiality) in addition to adding the enhancement to the attack. If you don't have enough points in your slot to pay for that, then you can't. Note that I'd allow this combination of traits in the slot as a form a "meta-trait" as it doesn't blatantly go against the rules, and only includes advantages/enhancements, and not any disadvantages to cheapen an ability's worth (as per another recent thread that I can't find at the moment). |

Re: Afflicted Insubstantial
I think it does not matter if it was beneficial or not.
It also depends on the special effect and powers your MA represents as to whether you can overcome it. If your MA is magic or Psi then I would let you buy attacks. If your MA matches the type of insubastantility then I would probably let you buy the affects Insubstantial Enhancement on the Affliction cast on you. |

Only if the afflicted insubstantial includes the Affects Substantial enhancement.

Re: Afflicted Insubstantial
I have to agree with the previous posts. If the Insubstantiality is not enhanced to affect substantial, you're out of luck.

Re: Afflicted Insubstantial
And given the relative costs of affliction (insubstantial) and various disabling afflictions, it's perfectly fair for it to be very hard to bypass.

I have no problem that it's difficult to bypass, however, having a modular ability is equally rare to a disabling affliction. And considering for 33 points (Resistant to Afflictions (Very Common, Immunity, Switchable)) I'm immune to any sort of disabling affliction . . . it seems that there are more factors than a single advantage's particular rules. Re: Afflicted Insubstantial
Only if you can alter the Insubstantiality. Can your character create an affliction that adds the Affect Substantial modifier to the Insubstantiality your character has been afflicted with? If your character can't, then, no, adding Affect Substantial to your attacks doesn't override the lack of Affect Substantial on the afflicted Insubstantiality itself.
