I start thumping on the armadillo (or I start thumping on the next turn if I need to arrive)

Shortsword (for rib clubs)

3d6 <= 14
1: 6 + 4 + 5 = 15 ... failure
2: 4 + 2 + 5 = 11 ... success
3: 3 + 3 + 1 = 7 ... success

sum: 33, average: 11.00, success: 2/3 67%

[928] 24-10-23 18:14:56 BST

Damage (using LT69 Baton)

4d6 -1
1 + 3 + 4 + 3 - 1 = 10

That's a move and attack to attack this round, so only one hit, and the armadillo dodges that...

Its rolling really good defenses for dodge 9.

Vassarious goes and then the armadillo, then the full weight of the party can be felt. If it makes it that far.

DWA Attack to Neck
5 + 3 + 4 = 12 ... success
Damage
1 + 4 + 5 + 2 + 5 + 5 + 1 = 23

DWA Attack to Neck
6 + 3 + 4 = 13 ... success
Damage
6 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 4 + 4 + 6 = 25

The armadillo's impossibly good dodge streak continues... but the -1 on DWA defeats it!

It takes 25 cutting damage to the neck, which is 23 after DR. The creature stands for just a few more instants after the blow, then woozily collapses.

Arlon discharges the lightening into the wall.

Halycone manages the scouting swarms. what's the interface she uses for this? a tablet? a HUD? Does she show the locals what she is doing?

Two of the three caverns to the right are dead-ends. One has another armadillo in it, as well as a set of five matching rat amulets, one silver and the others bronze.

Another has flowers and a blasted circle in the center, with a humanoid of obviously supernatural origin in it, with green skin.

The third cavern loops back to the portal. It has two chambers: one with a mystical fruit tree and a bunch of rats, and one with a giant ferret and a set of manacles in giant clover two feet high.

To the right is a 10 by 10 perfectly circular but natural cavern filled with a soft glow and a dense mat of vines. After that a wooden door, but any bugs that try to go under it get zapped and die as they cross the threshold. You don't loose too many. yet.

The sinkhole drops to a very large natural chamber, about 10 yards by 15 yards. I take it these bots are fliers? five beds of coals 2 yard by 3 yards are strewn about its sides, flames creeping up from them. The air smells of smoke, which lightly impedes vision, though the flames give a little light. The heat is strong. The bots measure the ambient temperature at 102 F. The sinkhole continues down, and two natural passages are shown at either side.

To the north of the fire room (hurrah for built-in compasses!) is a round cavern about 9 yards across, with a blazing pillar of fire in the center, three yards across. It has four exits. Two fire elementals are talking to each other. Small nuggets of copper and silver are scattered around the room.

To the south is a roughly 3 yard by 8 yard natural corridor with a gentle slope. A 2 yard by 1 yard coal bed is on the left side about three yards from the top of the corridor. A web of silvery metallic veins, like grass roots or spider silk, wraps around the corridor, thickest near the flame.

Under the sinkhole is a big drop, then a large underground lake. some spots on the edge of the lake glow.

I use a HUD as an interface, as that's what I'm used to, but I'll take out a tablet to show them what I'm seeing.

"Looks like those are the Rats Jaline mentioned. It's just another armadillo to deal with to fetch those."

Are they doing anything, or just standing around like a mob in an RPG?

"What is that?"

"I wonder what that fruit tastes like..."

"We'll have to check that doorway ourselves."

"Arlon, can you do something about the heat?"

What are they talking about?

"Fire guys... Maybe we could try and force them near the edge, and then push them into the lake?"

They glance at Halcyones pad... Such an interesting area... Vassarious enjoys taking in the layout and plan behind the place and tires to imagine meals being prepared here with fresh replenishing ingredients and fire elementals to do the cooking. The technology is a bit of a spoiler... A time saver to be sure, but exporation is it's own entertainment.

Arlon: "We're on the path to something at least. This is a strange area."

She seems to be meditating.

Quote:
"What is that?"
Haley: "Divine Servitor for...Therosia, I think. That's a pentagram there. She's trapped. She might be powering the magic in this entire section. Or someone might just want her out of the way."

Quote:
"I wonder what that fruit tastes like..."
Arlon: "It probably has some magical effect. No telling if its good or bad without trying it."

Quote:
"We'll have to check that doorway ourselves."
Haley: "Is that our priority?"

Arlon: "Its the only natural part of this level. That, the hint, the gate, the servitor, and the amulets. They might all be part of the same puzzle."

Quote:
"Arlon, can you do something about the heat?"
Arlon: "I don't think a cooling breeze will help very much if the whole tunnel is fire-aspected. And it might cause trouble. Wind and fire mix unpredictably."

Quote:
What are they talking about?
They are reminiscing about the time a gnome sold them a potion of fire-breathing.

Quote:
"Fire guys... Maybe we could try and force them near the edge, and then push them into the lake?"
Arlon: "Maybe. Its a fair distance to the hole. Might work better to just zap them. Those are very strong elementals. And we're still using bone clubs for weapons. Can you tell if its high mana down there as well?"

"Maybe we can pop by and ask after the amulets."

"Unfortunately I can't tell. These weren't designed by people aware of magic, otherwise they probably would have included that. Anyway, maybe we should just leave that area alone."

"Interesting.. Puzzles upon puzzles. I would like to attempt to converse with the Fire Elementals and the bound creature, and see what insights they may offer. It may be wise to be wary of handling the wrong amulet, or join the colony of rats."

Arlon: "So get the amulets, then talk to the servitor and the elementals? Or the other way around."

"Getting down the tunnel shouldn't be too hard, I know wall-walker, and there is plenty of mana"

Haley: "We don't know if you'll have that mana down in the fire yet: I'll stick a spike in the rock and set up a rope."

Arlon:"Or I can quickly pop down there and check." He does a funny little dance step going up and down in the air.
