All of that applies to creating a wife and true companion, true, Christian.
But that's not what most people will want to do with bioroids. Creating an actual wife out of thin air is just wrong on so many levels, and I have serious doubts that people would ever accept that. When I think of the bioroid thing I'd make, I think of it more as a pet that happens to be able to do housework or simple labor in a factory, not as something to have a stimulating conversation with. Kind of like a super-intelligent bipedal work dog. Others might want to create a boyfriend/girlfriend out of whole cloth and your point about people maybe wanting to install upgraded brains in them is valid - but that's already an option and not everyone will want the same thing out of their bioroid. |

Course, I also don't consider a sophont born naturally to be any more or less special then a sophont born of a factory. Life is life, regardless of the source. |

Oh I'm not thinking about making a wife. I just argument, that I would not want to INTENTIONALLY surround me with more people that complicate communication, if I could surround me with people that make communication easier.
Or to give another example: if you have the choice between a dishwasher that has to be programmed in mandarin (or kisuaheli or whatever) and a dishwasher that could be programmed in plain english, what would you choose? If you have the choice between a stupid dog, and a dog that will understand and follow your commands more smartly, what would you choose? If you have the choice between a super-intelligent bipedal work dog and a truly intelligent bioroid that can not only serve your coffee but also can help you in your own intelectual growth, what would you choose?

It has already been correctly stated that it would be rather unlikely to find some kind of bioroid model that isn't already in production and that sells good enough to outrun the current designs of the company.... Therefore my take on the answer would be to order a bioroid that is able to earn money directly - say someone who is very good at understanding people and markets. That would be a skill set that would enable me to invest money wisely. Furthermore the bioroid would be great at manipulating people and would therefore earn loads of money since it is able to get into great positions.
...After all if you have the money you can easily buy all the concubines you can ever dream of and I'm rather sure that there are lots and lots of those models already around if the technology is there. |

I think I was just discussing this with someone...
In order of importance: 0- Genetically programmed to enjoy doing all the work I want it to do [is it keeping a slave if the 'slave' is willing and draws actual enjoyment from the process; that's a question for an ethics board I won't have to deal with in this mental exercise; mental imprinting to owner on activation like a baby duck]; it should draw direct pleasure from making it's owners happy. 1- Photographic memory [finally, someone to always answer the question 'where did I put my...'] 2- Enhanced senses (infravision, telescopic vision, microscopic vision, low light vision, enhanced hearing and smell) 3- Regrowth, regeneration, high pain threshold, and high bio-compatibility with me (Lets be fair here my parts are going to be breaking down eventually, if I can count on my bio-roid to grow them back, and it won't be overly put out or permanently maimed by the process why not get replacements); alternatively some way to induce those traits in others: first on the list, I want my poor vision eyes replaced with those super-eyes! 4- A money making ability- like can weave spider silk, or build complex pharmaceuticals internally [it does not have to make it so that I need never work again, but it would be nice if it at least produced enough to pay for it's own care and then some] 5- Support skills/abilities <Like the above mentioned ability to manufacture pharmaceuticals, the pheromone control for mood regulation, voice for singing, musical ability for playing instruments> 6- Longevity/unaging/increased durability/HT; I'd prefer it to stay alive a fairly long time and not suffer from sickness/disease I purposely included no skills, give it max IQ and DX and let it learn 'on the job'. The fact that it draws direct pleasure from making me happy will assure that it learns to do things that make me happy, even things I might not anticipate initially (IE- what do you know, it turns out I like being mildly sedated an hour before bedtime because then I go to bed at a reasonable hour and sleep soundly immediately; but I don't think I'd ever ask for that just to see). I imagine primary learned skills would be housekeeping, message, cooking, general maintenance, gardening, singing, music, hobby: GMing games- in about that order. As for frame, I'm kind of torn on this one; I have always said that there are really only two design options once you can make it look like anything- impressive, or beautiful. If I ultimately decided on impressive I might go for something quadruped but with forepaw opposable thumbs, with multiple tentacle arms (say 10 telescoping reach 3 high dexterity tentacles; this way it can do anything that normally requires 10 fingers, and then some) on the back, hard chitinous or bone plates (additional DR), claws, and fangs. Radically increased move so it can take me too and from work like a horse (Is it speeding if your on horseback?) If I decided on beautiful I'd go for a very attractive female frame, stick on the sexbot extras- but add some defining 'this is not a human' features; overly vibrant hair colour, pointed ears, purple eyes; something to help others keep mental association in check. Nothing that would compromise appearance mind you. Ultimately I think the decision would come down to how cool my wife is with the concept of bioroids; intelligent guard dog who loves its people unconditionally might be easier to sell then 'no the really pretty girl enjoys being in obvious servitude, don't worry- by the way I'm grabbing her eye next week to replace mine, and then again a month after that once the first eye grows back, you can go next!' (go figure, my wife is a lot more emotionally sensitive then I am) Last edited by starslayer; 12-27-2010 at 01:32 PM. |
