The options are: pay points, pay cash, or free. If it comes from a friend cash probably makes no sense. Free mentions when you get no say in the matter, again not happening if its a friend. That leaves points. Everywhere it mentions getting rid of disadvantages it mentions buying them off, again it requires points.

Page 293 is about learning through study. Not a mage casting heal eye.
