If it does not work you suggest I just by the core sets and then mix all the cards together to make massive treasure and door piles? Or is there some set mixing formula that says " hey to effectively mix two munchkin sets together you should have xyz cards in there"?

I think the general feeling is that, when mixing, using only Core sets is preferable (or including Munchkin 7, Cheat with Both Hands, which has a lot of cards designed to help blends, extra Cheats, Super Munchkins, etc.) to keep things a bit simpler (crazy enough to deal with totally different themes without adding in whatever wrinkles the expansions added), and to keep the different themes on equal footing (in other words, the same amount of cards from each- so if you do add expansions it is probably a good idea to add them equally for each theme).
