[Powers] "Costs Pain" limitation

I'm not sure how to do this, but I'd like to know what the best way is to build an ability that causes progressively greater amounts of pain.

So, for instance, ST+5, that upon activation bumps you up a pain category (so, if you're not feeling pain, you get Moderate Pain, if in Moderate Pain, you feel Severe Pain, etc.). Then, after a minute of continuous use, your pain bumps up to the next level. The progression would be Moderate, Severe, Terrible, and then finally Agony. HPT, LPT, and related pain traits would work normally.

Any thoughts? I know I could use Backlash or Temporary Disadvantage or something like that so that usage gives some pain level, but I can't work out how to make the pain get progressively worse.

Use Modified Limitations to buy each level of Backlash with an increased delay. So constant use REALLY starts to hurt, while taking a break isn't so bad.

Offhand, give it a Limitation like "Maximum Duration" or similar, then give it an Enhancement of equal value that negates that and Limit the Enhancement with a Temporary Disadvantage/Backlash/Whatever worth the new level of pain minus the previous level.

Away from my Basic Set (and don't have Powers), so just throwing some numbers out here, let's say you've got a -50% Maximum Duration, the Advantage usually causes pain worth -15%, and going beyond the Maximum Duration causes pain worth -30%. That means your ability would have the -15% outright, then would have a -50% Maximum Duration that would be negated by a +42.5% Enhancement (-30% is -15% from the base of -15%, and 85% of 50% is 42.5%). Total Limitation value is therefore -22.5%. Stack as desired.

You'll want Backlash modified suitably. I am not sure what that looks like yet, I need to think about it. Might want to figure out how you'd make an Affliction that does this and then turn that into a Backlash.

Linked Affliction with Cumulative, and some sort of "Only on self" limitation?

Naw, just use Backlash. I was only suggesting thinking of it as an Affliction in order to get a value for the Backlash.
