Wizards go mad when they lose themselves
It's a rare wizard who doesn't have any remote viewing spells.
Scrying, Zombie, Create Elemental, Summon Scout, even an Image, they all grant an out-of-body experience. Perhaps being so many loosens the wizard's hold on the one they once were?

Re: Wizards go mad when they lose themselves
There's an SF story Call Me Joe by Poul Anderson in which this sort of happens, the point is that the experience is better in the other body than in the wizard's own. A wizard who inhabits a bird might become attached to having eyesight that good and being able to fly, a wizard who inhabits a wolf might find his real life drab and uninteresting without that amazing sense of smell, etc.
