Default Magic Lamp against a Wandering Monster

So I was at level 8 and played a Level 1 Maul Rat along with Mate. So I was easily winning.

My opponent played Wandering Monster along with some monster that I couldn't beat.

I tried putting down Magic Lamp to make the Wandering Monster disappear but without stopping the combat, using the theory that using Magic Lamp doesn't actually *require* you to run away. But my opponent argued that running away was implied.

So who was right?

"On their turn, the Player may use the Magic Lamp to summon a genie who makes a single Monster vanish, even if the Player fails to Run Away and it is about to catch them"

You were correct. The phrase about failing to Run Away is simply there to clarify that you can even use the card after failing a Run Away roll. It does not mean that you must be running away to use it.
