Default (MQ) Running away

Ok, so in Munchkin Quest, running away is a bit different from normal Munchkin.

You take a hit when you fail a combat, no matter if you succeed at the run away roll or not. You also take a hit if none of the monster's bad stuff affects you.

So, the Squidzilla monster. The bad stuff is that you take a hit, and lose one item that requires a hand.

Now, if I successfully run away, I still take a hit, correct? And if I don't run away, I take a second hit and lose an item. If I don't have an item, however, I don't take a third hit, because I was able to take a hit from the bad stuff and that's enough to count for "being affected by the bad stuff", right?
