Quite useful -- at least, for groups using the full equipment list from High-Tech (as opposed to those using only the 12 pages of gear found in MH1). See To Gear or Not to Gear (Monster Hunters 1: Champions, p. 58) for more on using L:MH . . . er, when MH1 comes out, that is. :)

And: Do you also cover Techlevels 6-8 and their differences in the MH-Series like it is done in the Load Outs or are there other assumptions about TL or...?
Nope, not at all. See my very first post in this thread for more. Trying to cover multiple tech levels would completely kill the point of a "simple, focused, worked example of a genre," which is what Monster Hunters will be. Much like DF, this is a "campaign in a box," which means that a few assumptions have to be made; TL is one of them.

I'm not sure I'd buy an unLevined MH series, but frankly, I've been delving deeper and deeper into that genre and cannot wait for this release. Thank god PK is involved!

Okay, since the discussion has digressed into types of bread, obviously I need to give you guys something to do for the next week or two. And everyone wants hints about the kind of things that will be in MH1. So let's steal the template guessing idea, but in a fair way:

Unofficial MH1 Template-Name-Guessing Challenge

The Rules For This One: For each template, I'll post what makes the character a total badass. Your job is to come up with the name of the template. To make it easier, I'll describe them in alphabetical order. First person to guess all 10 correctly wins!

Wins What? The respect and admiration of everyone on the board. I mean, c'mon . . . this is my Plan B for contests. I really figured the last one would take longer to solve. So think of this as more of an interactive leak than a contest. :)
_____________________

Why Each Template Is A Badass:

1. Guns. He can put jacketed-wood bullets through multiple vampire hearts while crashing through a warehouse window and rolling to safety. (Gunslinger and crazy-high levels of Gun! and Tactics.)

2. Faith. His ties to a higher power (be it God, the loa, or a powerful spirit collective) make him a fearsome foe of any evil supernatural being. (Mysticism power -- think if DF's Holy Might and GURPS Voodoo had a child.)

3. Bioengineering. His genetics were overhauled or built-from the ground up, making him the ultimate living weapon. (Bioenhancement power -- a mix of mental, physical, and sensory "power-ups" to the human body.)

4. Identity. He is one of the monsters that stalks the night . . . but fortunately, he's on our side. (A choice of several different racial templates -- all powerful and capable in different ways.)

5. Mentalism. His brain is capable of "mind over matter" to an astounding degree, with abilities both powerful and versatile. (A selection of four different, but related, powers -- all with a unique focus.)

6. Knowledge. His awareness of the enemy is unmatched, and his mental pursuits grant him power over the forces of magic (High levels of Lore! skill and some -- relatively slow -- spellcasting ability.)

7. Intel. He is a master of gathering and analyzing information; this includes everything from slipping into places unseen to chatting up the locals for info. (Intuition, both Detective! and Talker!, crazy Stealth, and more!)

8. Science. He can adapt, invent, and analyze any technology, figuring out how to adapt it to fight supernatural foes. (Quick Gadgeteer, Gizmos, and high levels of Inventor!)

9. Prowess. He's tough, strong, and fast enough to go head-to-head with most monsters, using muscle-powered weapons to devastating effect. (Great stats, Weapon Master, high levels of Blade!, and a handful of cinematic skills.)

10. Magic. He is a dedicated spellcaster who can produce almost any effect you can think of, and in a relatively short time. (Magery, [FNORD], high Thaumatology, high [FNORD] skills.)

Two notes:

A. I anticipate some of you worrying about the prevalence of wildcard skills in the templates above, as wildcards have traditionally not been a smart use of points. Trust me, you'll like having 'em there after you read Chapter 2. That's all I'm saying.

B. Sorry about FNORDing the last one, but I'm not quite ready to spoil Chapter 3 yet.

That's a fair question. Each template is only a single word.

Nah, I'll happily admit up-front that I didn't pick any names that I thought might get us sued. :)
