To what extent could it be said SJG has or has not been a part of traditional publishing?

How has SJG handled distribution over the years, particularly for RPG books?

There were GURPS books on the shelves of traditional book stores back in the late eighties and early nineties. That suggests distribution through a mainstream distributor like Random House but I think SJG were still buying their own printing at the time rather than having the books printed and distributed that way.
