Default Evening out is D0

Evening out to fit the grid is a D0 maneuver by the rules as written but is the intent that it's free? (It also says that it doesn't affect speed or handling...)

If I'm "safe", D0 is essentially a free action but if I'm on an unsafe spot on the control table (a number or XX), that's the situation I'm wondering about.

I believe the intent is that it's free. It's intended, in the absence of a turning key, to keep the car as aligned with the grid as possible so as to facilitate the square-based maneuver processes. This is particularly relevant in the intended context - primarily road duels, where everybody is going in pretty much the same direction and is pretty much aligned with the grid most of the time anyways. It's a game mechanical process, done for game mechanical reasons, not a simulation of any particular event within the game world.

Once you're using the turning key, you've basically turned Car Wars into a miniatures game that just happens to be using flat, rectangular cardboard miniatures, and you should probably not be bothering with evening out, since the turning key process gives you precise turns without depending on grid alignment.

That makes sense! Thank you ♥︎

I only have one single turning key so using the grid makes some amount of sense
