Just for fun I thought I might post this...
This is the classification of vehicles as they are now, in our time. I hope this helps any campaigns anyone has. I came across this and I thought "Car Wars"!

Appendix 4-C FHWA Vehicle Types
Has text descriptions of the different FHWA Vehicle Classes with Definitions. Interestingly, it also states this: Quote:

Here are a few more that might prove interesting.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_body_style http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_classification http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truck_classification http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automotive_design The "see also" links from them should also have lots of good stuff. I've been trying to figure out some way to work this stuff into the game, but I think that it might require GURPS Vehicles levels of detail. Still, they're worth reading.

Re: Just for fun I thought I might post this...
Seriously though, this way lies madness. For instance, the sedan body type in Car Wars ought to be more properly termed a full size or "executive car"; the Car Wars mid-size and luxury generally refer to sedan (IRL) body types on those chassis. So we'd end up with something like:
Chassis sizes: subcompact, compact, mid-size, full-size, luxury, class 1 light truck, class 2a light truck, class 2b light truck. Body styles: sedan, wagon, van, pickup... minivan, SUV, coupe utility (the Ford Ranchero/Chevy El Camino style)... Modifications: Pickups can take any "oversized" 10-wheel options; vans can be "cutaway" and modified with... pretty much anything you want. Even pickups have their own sizing structure; there are compact, mid-size, and full-size pickups (generally class 1, class 2a, and class 2b light duty trucks, respectively). To add even more confusion, there are three duty classifications: light duty truck (class 1-3), medium duty truck (class 4-6), and heavy duty truck (class 7-8, which require a class B commercial driver license in the US); the class 7-8 heavy duty trucks are what Car Wars calls "tractor" as in a tractor-trailer rig.

I like the existing body types - except call Campers SUVs lol
And trikes are still silly but I like them - it gives cyclists something to look forward to besides dying |
