Because he'd be replaced by someone more capable and less insane. Early in the war, it would probably be Göring. A deeply flawed man, but far more flexible and adaptable than Hitler. If nothing else, a harder and more focused worker. Germany would still be unlikely to win, but the Nazi state might survive the war. Especially if Hitler dies before Operation Barbarossa and Göring is only dealing with Churchill. Not that Churchill would be insane enough to trust Göring. But he might not have the chance to refuse a peace deal that his party likes.

There's only one solution; make sure the New York World's Fair goes on, the Germans and Russians send a delegation, and make the most fantastic jelly beans at the fair, so they will be naturally returned their leaders and eaten.

I happened to be reading up on the 1939 World's Fair the other day. It occurred to me that it would be a very interesting roleplaying opportunity because WWII started only 6 months in to the exhibition, and numerous countries had pavilions. In a pulp setting this would be the perfect backdrop to all sorts of espionage activities, especially given the focus on science and technology at the Fair.

There is a Doc Savage I think where the Trylon and Perisphere at the 1939 fair were actually mad scientist devices not just art objects.

When Roy Thomas revived the JSA in the 1980s and called it The All-Star Squadron the superheroes set up their clubhouse in the Perisphere with the Trilon as a hangar. Elekto was the butler.

Comic book writers of the period were well aware of that, in fact. Sure, they didn't know when the war would start, but it was very clear that a big war was coming soon.

Wow! Thanks for linking that comic. That must be worth something for anyone who still has an actual copy of the comic. Talk about a limited edition!

Try this one...

This Earth's geography is different from most parallels in that the Qattara Depression is simply the far northeastern end of a vast depression covering two-thirds of the Sahara. When a determined Victorian engineer builds a canal to flood the Qattara he instead floods the Sahara.

Now, this Saharan basin isn't as deep as the Mediterranian Sea, but it covers more area, so the volume is the same. What started as a small canal quickly erodes into a vast canyon filled with roaring waters.

Now the Zanclean Flood lowered world sea levels by forty feet or so. This means that flooding this world's Saharan Basin would drop sea level by a similar amount.

As the canal was opened in 1890 and the basin was filled in 1905, with most of the draining coming in the last three years, that means that this Q5 parallel is in crisis in 1906. The world's harbors and docks are in chaos, shipping lanes face new threats as previously sunken rocks come near the surface. New lands extend above the seas.

Basically 19th-century imperialism with a new map. Remember the New Saharan Sea is going to massively change the climate of Africa creating vast rich lands to grab. (And from my limited knowledge of meteorology, should generate plenty of extra hurricanes).

Texas, 1910

Divergence: Henry Clay wins the 1844 U.S. Presidential Election.

Henry Clay wins the White House and his fellow Whigs control Congress long enough to prevent the annexation of Texas. Without a Texas annexation, the U.S./Mexico War doesn't happen, which means the U.S. doesn't get the American Southwest. Maximillian I is still placed on the throne of a larger Mexico Empire by Napoleon III and Mexican monarchists in 1863. The Discovery of gold in California in 1865 fills both the Emperor’s coffers and provides a safety valve for revolutionary energies. As a butterfly effect in this timeline, Benito Juarez is killed in a house fire in 1846, robbing the reformers in Mexico of their most charismatic leader. The Mexican Empire managed to gain control over many former Spanish holdings in the Caribbean during the second half of the 19th century. The Mexican Empire Stretches from Wyoming in the north, to Panama in the south, Puerto Rico in the east, and the Philippines in the west.

As if by luck alone, the Texas Republic manages to remain beyond the grasp of the Mexican Empire and has allied with the United States and Britain.

Emperor Maximilian I passed away in 1895. His son, Maximilian II reigned for only 5 years before he and his wife were killed in a terrorist attack. The crown has now passed to the 14-year old Princess Isabella, now Empress Isabella I. Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany created an alliance between the two Empires, sealed by a marriage of Empress Isabella with his own son, Crown Prince Wilhelm III.

By 1905, a Germany-Austro-Hungry-Mexico (The Imperial Triumvirate) alliance has boxed in the British Empire, bullies the French Empire (which is an Empire in name only), and is running the world.

The world runs on Imperial steam, pickle helms, and handlebar mustaches.

In 1908, a global war begins after the assignation of Empress Isabella’s cousin, Duke Alfred, on a tour of Austin in the Texas Republic and triggers a chain of Alliances... Texas, U.S., Britain, & Canada vs. The Triumvirate. Both trying to bring France and Russia onto their side. In 1809, Japan joins the U.S. British Alliance and quickly seizes the Philippines and Guam. In the Atlantic, British submarines dodge the Kriegsmarine and sink transport and supply ships heading for Veracruz.
