I used to have a tradition of making a New Year's Resolution that was always the same. It was, "I won't make any New Year's Resolutions!" I'd stick to that--until the last day of the year.
There's something we've done with those who don't stay up late, including kids. That's to celebrate the coming of the New Year in a different time zone. So it might be 8 p.m. here, but midnight over there!

A few years ago I noticed that several of my nearby friends didn't have family commitments on Boxing Day (for Americans, 26 Dcember, a public holiday even for those employers who keep the office open between Christmas and the New Year).
