December 23, 2024: Escape Ordinary Gift Cards?

We had a wooden advent calendar, and one time - c.2011 - we got some small decorations as advent gifts for our kids (for alternate days as a break from chocolate). Unfortunately we discovered they didn't fit in the boxes, so we hid them around the house and put clues in the boxes instead. They loved it! The advent treasure hunts became a tradition; each year the clues got harder, and as they grew they started doing some of the clues for each other (which gave my wife and I a break). The gifts evolved too, e.g., some years it was pages from a printed-out webcomic so they got the full stories by the 24th.

They are both in their 20s now and aren't around for the whole of advent, but I spotted an 'escape' style game in a charity shop which had 12 puzzles on cards so I got that, and they have been working their way through puzzles to get to puzzles.

My favourite clue so far this year has been "between the theatre and the tortoises". They needed one elaborating clue - the word "famous" - from which they worked out it was slipped between two volumes of The Science of Discworld: The Globe and Darwin's Watch. They are smarter than me...

We've done something like this with children, teens, and adults as an Erister Egg Hunt. Different time of year, but it could work as well now as then!

On a side note, while I bought GURPS Time Travel in physical form during the previous millennium, looks like I never got it on computer. Time to escape to my shopping cart....
