I first heard about midget submarines from a naval magazine (Procedings) back in the 80s. The cover had a japanese midget submarine on display outdoors somewhere. It had two holes in the conning tower.

Recommended book: Paul Kemp, Midget Submarines of the Second World War. Decent amount of technical detail, and the ways they were used.

I did not realized that until I have visited Istria (including Pula/Pola) last holidays. I knew Pola as one of most important war-time Italian navy ports, I just did not know that it is Pula in Crotatia now.
As to the Istria pennisula - so many Italian names of Towns and Streets! And Italian tourists, often visiting places where their families used to dwell. European history is very interesting.
