It's a trap
Untalented Detect Traps is at the base number of dice so a few IQ 12+ alert characters in a party will spot just about everything by just walking by.
Untalented Remove Traps is a death sentence. ITL 39 doubled dice and miss by 5 sets off. (One assumes that only a critical failure sets off for those with the talent? Who knows?) ITL 72 says that any failure triggers the trap though. So Summon an Elf Myrmidon with DX 18 and she has a 27.94% of removing a base 3/DX to remove trap (as a Summons she's untalented of course), and either a 28% or 72% chance of setting the trap off each time. (Depending on how far into the rulebook the GM has read.) So if you're willing to pay the ST to maintain the summons the not quite imaginary elf lass has either a 50/50 or a less than one in three chance of disarming the trap. Best to just Summon Scout and have your rat gnaw on the problem for a minute?

This, of course, assumes metagamey play is welcomed at the table.

I've always treated Myrmidons as fighters/meat shields only. They'll face off with an Ogre for you, but they won't do your taxes, wash the dishes, etc.

Re: It's a trap
How long would it take your summoned myrmidon to attempt to disarm a trap? That would be a lot of 1 ST maintenance cost.
If your high IQ folks spotted a trap or you suspect a trap, just have a summoned fighter try to open the door/chest, etc. That should take 1 turn and set off the trap right away. If there is a trap there. |

Re: It's a trap
Yeah, I can't think of any incentive for your band of high IQ wizards to disarm a fiery explosion trap on a chest full of spellbooks. Just set it off.
If you violate ITL 139's "An illusion can have any IQ 7 weapon talent." for Summon Myrmidon then why have non-wizards at all? Just don't summon a suicidal genius. (c.f. The Fantasy Trip Companion, page 27, Master’s Thesis.)

But obviously, real live people don't cost 1 ST every turn they're around and they advance as they gain experience while a summoned myrmidon is always 32 attribute points, no matter how experienced the wizard is, so it's silly to think that you would do as well just playing a bunch of wizards every game. Not to mention, of course, that this is a role playing game. I mean, if you want to play a party full of wizards summoning myrmidons, do feel free, but I don't think that's a universal goal for TFT players. |
